Kendo is a form of two-handed sword fencing, in which, thanks to the use of appropriate equipment (bamboo weapon, protective armour), assaults are real. There is also a practice with 2 shinai attributed to Miyamoto Musahi. Practitioners are called kendoka (this term is seldom used in Japan) or kenshi. Kendo is practiced in a dōjō, which is a room equipped with a wooden floor or in a gym if no floor is available. There are no weight categories and practitioners do not wear any distinctive mark showing their rank.
